For Labor Day we decided to head off to Vemrillion, Ohio to spend a day at Lake Erie. Abby was staying at College so it was Tash, Leah, and I.
The forecast initially said thunderstorms, then no storms, then a 20% chance of rain, then no rain. So the forecast kept changing.
So we decided to try our luck, and luck was not quite with us. We got in the car and headed off with road-snacks and some in-car entertainment.
From Michgian through Ohio it was pretty solid overcast, if not low IFR conditions all the way. When we reached Vermillion, The weather did not improve, and there was indeed rain, which petered out shortly after we arrived at the beach, leaving there were lots of clouds with a fully overcast sky.
We did as the sign instructed. |
Not a day for swimming, as due to the choppy water and there was a major undertow warning for the beach as well as quite constantly blowing wind. A few people wandered the beach, but we had it practically to ourselves. On our previous visit when you could hardly find a spot.
So we pulled out our chairs and had some snacks on the beach and read a bit and watched the rather choppy waves.
After awhile it got a bit chilly in the wind so we packed up and headed off. We walked around for a bit then drove home, stopping at IKEA for some items along the way. Got home, tended to lots of things that needed doing, made dinner, and now just relaxing for the rest of the night.
Still, it was a nice calm time, and not a bad little family road trip.

Home again, home from the hi...water... ;-)
Here in Muskegon today, it was 72. And very cloudy, also. But yesterday we also had wind, which made it cold. Today it felt a bit cool, but really not bad. You can feel that fall is in the air.
Speaking of undertow, on Lake Michigan this year, we have had a very bad year, as far as drownings are concerned. I am not sure what the total number will be, but it seems like a lot of deaths this summer, like more than 10, which is a lot, for this area.
And also, we can't forget the shootings. The death total here in Muskegon continues to climb, every year, from mostly drug and gang related shootings, but also from robberies. I moved here in 1992, 30 years ago, and shootings were unusual. I was not afraid to drive practically anywhere, day or night. Now there are places that I choose not to go, even in daylight. I likely could go there without a problem, but I don't take the chance. There are some areas that simply are not safe for an old, white man now.
It is a shame, but I think that is the way of the world now.
Old NFO: Yep. On the upside a nice scenic drive around Lake Erie.
pigpen51: Yes there's been a lot of drownings in Michigan this year, many form not wearing life-jackets combined with alcohol use. Did not know there was quite that much crime in Muskegon, and unfortunately that does seem to be the way things are going.
