P30SK Hits 1,000 Rounds

Yesterday, I went to a nearby indoor range with a very good client of mine.

I brought along a few firearms as did he, the subject of which will get their own posts once I process a few pictures.

We both shot a total of 200 rounds through the P30Sk, bringing the round count up to 1,000.

That's 1,000 rounds through with only one failure (round 22) which was not due to the firearm.

He also brought along his HK VP9SK, the striker-fired version of the P30SK. The trigger on that firearm has to be felt to be believed.

Certainly the best striker-fired trigger I've shot, and it is unmodified right out of the box and was both lighter and smoother than the PS0SK's LEM trigger, making it easier to make accurate and speedy shots. Very impressive indeed and I could get badly spoiled with a trigger like that. No failures observed on the VP9SK either.

Afterwards, we got together with the families for dinner and had a great time.

A very nice way to spend a Sunday.

NRAAM - H&K VP9SK

The Heckler and Koch Booth was positively jammed all throughout the show.

It finally cleared out enough for me to take a couple quick shots as the show was closing on Saturday and they began rolling out the tape to seal off the booths.

Everyone throughout the day had been crowded around the pistol H&K fans had been clamoring for awhile for them to produce: the VP9SK.

H&K listened to the demand, apparently decided that you don't in fact suck, and the VP9SK is now released to the US Market:

Think a VP9 now P30SK-sized but striker fired with all the H&K grip modification options. It comes with a ten round magazine and of course has the ability to take both full sized VP9 mags and the sightly more compact 13 round USP compact magazine which when used gives it about a Glock 19 overall size.

It fits my hand unsurprisingly just like my P30SK.

The trigger feels just like the one on the VP9 - one of the best striker fired triggers out there.

I expect they'll sell quite well to the H&K fans wanting a striker-fired compact and to others looking for a high quality concealed carry firearm.

Good Dry Fire Training Product - Ring's Blue Magazines

Just got an excellent product for more dry fire practice.

They're Rings Blue Gun Training Magazine for the HK P30.

Fit and finish of the blue magazines is quite good. They fit the P30 perfectly and match real magazines in fit and feel, and they insert and drop free just like the functional magazines.

The rear of the blue mag even has the molding of the round count markings in the right spot as well as the zipper weld seen on the actual HK magazines, which is a nice touch.

They're good as using blue mags for dry fire practice reloads reduces wear on the rather expensive HK P30 magazines from hitting the floor.

They're also good as they're yet another safety tool in preventing the risk of a live magazine being inadvertently inserted during dry fire practice. Any steps that reduce the chance of unwanted holes in things is always a good thing. Rings also makes blue magazines for quite a few other pistols and they're well worth looking into.

HK's SP5K

HK had some new products on display, the SP5K, and they are now offering the VP series in FDE.

As you can see, the SP5Ks on display never stayed in one place for long.

With an MSRP of $2699 for a large semi auto pistol, you can expect there to be quite a bit of demand and for it to be bought by lots of HK fans, because HK.  

Yes, per the HK rep, the lower on the SP5K is different from the full auto version by quite a bit to prevent illegal conversions.  If you have to have an MP5K look alike, now you can.

No changes to the VP line yet except an offering of frames ion flat dark earth.  A VPSK (a compact version of the VP line) is in the works, as is a VP in .45 ACP, (yes jolts of Americans demand a .45, as indeed quite a few people were asking about it at the booth)  but neither is out on the market yet, maybe we'll see them at the 2017 show as they are being worked on.

H&K P30

The other gun that I brought out for the first time last Saturday was the H&K P30.

The grip on this gun has to be felt to be believed. It fits my hand like it was custom designed for it.

This one has the LEM V1 trigger. It's a hammer-fired, light double action design.

The trigger has a different feel from the striker-fired pistols I'm normally shooting and will take a bit of getting used to. It's certainly longer but with a smooth release that allows for quick aimed shots.

It's very accurate out of the box, and 100 rounds later there were zero misfeeds or issues of any kind. The pistol came with Meprolight Tru-Dot night sites installed so it is all set to be a carry pistol. The hammer design also makes it a tad safer to carry appendix style than a striker-fired pistol, as if you re-holster while pressing down on the hammer with your thumb, you can prevent the pistol from firing, as you will have prevent the hammer from moving. You'll also immediately feel if anything has snagged the trigger as the hammer will start to move under your thumb.

The magazine release on the P30 is an ambidextrous paddle release on the trigger guard. Even though I had not used one before, it was very easy and intuitive to adjust to and mag releases were quick and easy, without having to have your dominant hand thumb search for a mag release button. It's a feature that you'll either love or hate and I must say I'm siding with the "like it very much" side of that argument.

The magazines hold 15 rounds, 2 rounds less than the M&P 9 of just about comparable size. Allegedly that's to enhance the reliability of the magazine. The very sharp feed lips do not however enhance the magazine reloading experience, but that seems to be an H&K standard.

Since the release of the VP9, which takes the same magazines as the P30, spare magazines have been almost impossible to find. I'd like to buy a few more and give this pistol a go in USPSA production competition but with only three magazines that's not going to be in the cards just yet.

Overall it's a great gun and seems more accurate than I am. I do need to take it out and shoot it more, and soon. I think we'll do the standard 2000 round test on it and I don't expect any issues.

Now, If I could just find some more magazines . . . .

My first impression is very, very positive in terms of ergonomics, reliability and function, but we'll see how the second impression goes.

NRA AM: The HK P30SK

New and just revealed at the NRA AM from H&K is the P30SK.

All the features of the P30 in a smaller and more compact package.

The HK rep stated these should be hitting the stores in June.

All the P30 variants - with or without switch safeties, double action and LEM will be available.

The P30SK felt great in the hand, a nice compact variant that is very nice indeed.

Also, the HK rep let me know that the VP40 version of the VP9 will be coming out soon with the VPSK series to follow.
