NCL Cruise Day 3: Netherlands: The Origins of A Phrase

After visiting the windmills, we then traveled to a historic village Broek in Waterland to see its historic church, about 8 km northeast of Amsterdam.

The church has been there since 1525.

While there is a cemetery outside the church, the very rich of the congregation could buy themselves a much more premium location.

Remains placed inside on the walls of the church:

And an even more premium location: In the floor of the sanctuary itself.

The bodies are right beneath the floor of the sanctuary, beneath the inscribed stones marking their locations.

When buried, bodies tend to decompose and give off quite a smell, and on a hot day during services this must have been a tad uncomfortable.

Allegedly, this stench of bodies undergoing decomposition in church is the origin of the phrase "Stinking Rich".
