Abby was awarded her degree this weekend in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology from the University of Michigan.
The main graduation was on Saturday where 14,000 students earned their degrees and the University of Michigan conferred its one millionth degree since it was founded, which is quite a milestone. More on the Saturday ceremony later.
For the record, that she graduated with that degree means she is a heckuva lot smarter than I am.
In addition to that, at the smaller and much more personal graduation ceremony for the MCDB Department, on Friday evening, she walked and received her degree certificate and her thesis was announced.
She also received the award that is given to the honors undergraduate with the highest ranked thesis not just in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology but in the entire Biology Department. That make her the #1 graduate out of 600 graduates. The Review team for the award had comments that included that the thesis was not an undergraduate level but was instead a thesis at the doctoral level, which is amazing.
For the record, that means she is a heckuva, heckuva, lot smarter than I am.
The members of the lab she worked at, including the head professor of the lab, and two of her co-(and more senior) researchers and friends who had just earned their Ph.D.s were there to cheer her on.
She's going to work in the lab this summer as an actual employed (and paid!) Research Aisstant and then she will be heading out of town to a PH.D. program in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology to make her mark in the world doing some cutting-edge research in the field.
To say I'm beyond proud is an understatement.

Good job, both of you.
You can't say it so I will. The apple didn't fall too far from the tree.
Wait a minute...she can't be THAT old! Just...last week she was a pre-teen!!! Congrats Abby!
Well DONE!!!
Back in the day, .the universities became income-corporations, she would have gotten a PhD for doing PhD work. Congratulations to her for her achievement, especially when most college graduates these days graduate at a level most high schoolers graduated at in the 60's.
And congratulations on you and yours for allowing her achievements
You have certainly got a right to be proud of her. With so many students graduating college with a degree in some humanities course, I.E. left wing propaganda expert, to have someone graduate with an actual degree that required doing real work and studying means something.
No doubt Abby will do just as well in her career path over the coming years. As just one other thing, she is obviously smart, but even more importantly, she is ambitious. That combination is hard to beat, but ambition alone takes some people a long way, making up for not being the smartest person in the room with outworking everyone, making oneself a leader. For Abby to have both intellect and ambition means that she will be unstoppable. Good for her, and best wishes for continued success.
Congratulations, Abby! Now the "fun" starts.

Chuck Pergiel: Thank you!
Eaton Rapids Joe: Possibly, but I am quite happy to see her turning out smarter than myself. even in Middle School, it was pretty clear she was more than just smart. After all, quite of few of her teachers when asked if we should do anything to support her said: Just stay out of her way.
Old NFO: Yep, she's grown up fast.
Rick T: Thank you!
Beans: Yep, she has made quite a number of accomplishments, with many more to come.
Pigpen51: Thanks! We can't wait to see what she accomplishes next.
juvat: Thanks!
