Bury That Lede There Detroit Free Press

The Detroit Free Press: Eid celebrated by thousands in Michigan as war abroad dampens mood

Thousands of Muslims across Michigan celebrated Friday, March 20, the Eid al-Fitr holiday, marking the end of Ramadan, a month of spiritual reflection and fasting marred by wars abroad this year that affected many in metro Detroit.

Nice job Detroit Free Press on skipping right past the elephant in the article: three Islamic terrorist attacks in the United states during Ramadan, including one in metro Detroit a few short days ago.

No mention at all of that rather important local event, that most certainly "affected many in metro Detroit" funny, that.

Meanwhile, the 2026 Ramadan Hostility Scoreboard includes a worldwide total of at least 133 Islamic terrorist attacks with 499 people murdered in those terrorist attacks.

No other religion has quite the reputation and track record for annually going out and committing murder during their proclaimed holy days.

Details, Details, Details

A stabbing on the University of Michigan Campus led to the following description of the attacker in the Detroit Free Press:

The alert, sent at 6:22 p.m., asked people to avoid the area of the Zina Pitcher and Catherine Street. A follow up alert, sent at 7:11 p.m., identified a suspect as a heavyset male wearing a white shirt, tie and jeans, and asked anyone who sees him to call 911.

The Detroit Free Press:  Suspect arrested after stabbing causes emergency alert on University of Michigan campus

Funny how this news article giving the description of the alert failed to mention a rather salient, useful, and kinda distinctive identifying feature.

I mean, there's a wide range of heavyset males wearing a white shirt, tie and jeans, even in Ann Arbor.

Oh yeah, that identifying feature, courtesy of the helpful campus alert.

You'd think that additional descriptor would be helpful in catching the attacker, but the mainstream media does not.

Anyhoo, the suspect is now thankfully under arrest and in custody.

Well he is for now, at least until Washtenaw County's progressive prosecutor's focus on racial equity and progressive justice lets him out the revolving door.

Those Tolerant Dearborn Islamics

The Detroit Free Press: Dearborn mayor tells resident he's not welcome in city after opposing sign for Arab leader

Yes, Dearborn has named a street to honor someone who is Pro-Hamas, Pro-Hezbollah, and a piece of Shiite.

Then, the Muslim mayor had the temerity to tell a resident who objectedabout such an honor being bestowed on a terrorist sympathizer and propagandist that the resident is not welcome in the city.

That tells you quite a lot about Dearborn and its government, doesn't it?

Let's also note the Detroit Free Press really soft walked why there was an objection to honoring Siblani:

because of Siblani's past statements on some Middle Eastern groups.

"Past statements on some middle eastern groups".  Way to bury the lede there Detroit Free Press, and provide cover for the Islamics. Well done.

They honored Osama Siblani, a pro-terrorist scumbag who has said, among other things:

We the Arabs, Whether in Michigan or Jenin, Will Help Bring the Palestinians to Victory over Israel, with Stones, Guns, Planes, Drones, Rockets, and Our Voices

says Arab-American Activist Osama Siblani during Dearborn, Michigan rally

During a pro-Hezbollah  demonstration Siblani also said:

September rally noted chants of “death to Israel” prompted an assurance from Siblani that Hezbollah “will take care of the job.”

and charmingly:

Siblani also offered a message to Israel’s Jews led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu: “We will take you back to Poland.”

Yep, quite a man worthy of being honored in Dearbornistan. I will note that Netanyahu was born in Tel Aviv,  Israel -- not Poland.

CBS, The New York Times,  The Detroit Free Press, Michigan's Democratic Party and many others owe an apology to The Wall Street Journal and Steve Stalinsky.

Short of the Henry Ford Museum, there's no reason to go to Dearborn and support muslim pro-terrorists, at all.

Walmart Stabber Mentally Ill - How He Was Stopped Didn't Fit The Media Narrative

While not featured, and  the media here is at least admitting that it was a man with a pistol that helped stop the mentally-ill stabber that attacked 11 people in a Walmart in Taraverse City.

The Detroit Free Press: Sheriff: Bystanders helped stop Michigan Walmart stabbing suspect from hurting more people

It only took until the sixth paragraph for the Detroit Free Press to note that of the men surrounding the stabber and stopping him there was:

one who appears to be holding a handgu

Still, at least that's something.

The Detroit News also took the same six paragraphs to get to that rather important fact, but they were at least a bit more definitive about it:

The Detroit News: Sheriff: Traverse City Walmart stabbings started near checkout lanes

About five minutes later, the man was surrounded by shoppers in the parking lot, including one who was holding a gun.

Both the Detroit Free Press and the  Detroit News managed to fail to mention that the hero with the gun who stopped the stabber happened to be Black - because that really wouldn't have fit the narrative.

Nor did they so much as mention that this hero was a law-abiding Black man who had a concealed carry permit and was legally carrying at the time.

Hero?  Yes, he and the others certainly are heroes by taking action then and there to stop the attack and subdue the attacker - long before the police arrived.

And the stabber, to no one's surprise has a long history of both criminal convictions (with minimal sentences) and of mental illness.

The Detroit Free Press: Traverse City Walmart stabbing suspect had history of mental health and legal troubles

We need to treat mental illness a lot more seriously in this country, and actually institutionalize those who are a danger to themselves and others, rather than let them wander free and assault others at will.

Is The Detroit Free Press Using AI To Write Headlines?

Here's the headline for the story: The Detroit Free Press: Township of 65,000 people elects new top official by 5-1 landslide vote

Except the "Township of 65,000 people didn't vote 5-1 for a replacement supervisor, the Township Board did.

Legions of fact-checkers and all that.

Not that there's anything wrong with that, and there isn't, but the headline and later the article implies it was the voters of the township that did it, making it appear a lot more impressive a landslide than it was.

And then he was sworn in. But two days later, Supervisor Steve Kaplan resigned to take another job. What to do?

Following the state constitution, West Bloomfield, a community of about 65,000 residents, elected a new supervisor on Monday afternoon – by a vote of 5-1.

Board members held an unscheduled special meeting, heard comments for an hour, and then elected two-term trustee Jonathan Warshay to the full-time job of running the big, affluent township that's 27 miles northwest of Detroit.

Even the article is written implying it was a community-wide vote rather than the Board voting 5-1 to appoint one of its members as the new interim supervisor.

In any case I certainly wish the new Supervisor success, and wish the prior one had not run for re-election if he had no intention of actually serving for another term.  But, Kaplan's running as an incumbent certainly blocked any challengers to the spot, keeping it in Democrat control (which to be fair it likely would have in any case), so that was likely simply politics and gamesmanship on his part to block competitors from the slot.

The article headline and content is still rather misleading as the citizens of West Bloomfield did not get an opportunity to vote for their new Supervisor, much less endorse him by a landslide 5-1 vote.

Perhaps The Most Racist Op-Ed You'll Read Today

It's waiting for you at the Detroit Free Press:

Opinion: I hesitated to call police when white woman needed my help

The title really sets the stage doesn't it? As you might guess, the op-ed writer is not-White. You can go read the whole emotive thing, but here's the highlights:

He gets a knock on his door and a Black male is helping a White lady clearly in distress and lacking mental capacity.

He hesitates because he's Black and then the virtue signalling and victimhood begins, but the two guys do decide to call the police for assistance.

So then the police arrive:

While we wait, the jogger points out that it's not dark yet. That's a good             thing, he says. Daylight is on our side. . . .

two uniformed officers — a young Black female and a male of Arab descent — emerge from the police car. She’s smiling, and he’s not giving off any threatening vibes.

Whew! (Thanks, Southfield Police Chief Elvin Barren, for your diverse department.)

He's thankful they're not white.  That's not racist at all, is it?

The police arrived and no one got hurt and the lady in need of help was helped.  Funny how that works right?  That's actually exactly how it works in over 99.999% of the time in such interactions with police.

But it gets better:

I’m happy we were there to help, and relieved that Linda is headed back to her worried husband. But I'm also saddened at what all these police shootings have done to us.

The jogger and I both recognized Linda's vulnerability, but as Black men, our first instinct was to protect ourselves. We were eager to help, but we understood that we might be vulnerable, too. We didn't want anybody to die.

We gotta fix this.

Well he could fix this by working on his self-perspective and understand that he's been lied to. He could work on it by understanding that in fact, if he's not committing a crime and not resisting arrest, nor attacking police, his chance of dying at police hands is pretty damn minuscule and indeed is just about zero.

In fact, the chance of anyone dying by a Police shooting is again rather impressively low, and almost zero,  unless you're doing something that justifies their using deadly force - and then the odds start to tick up from zero accordingly.

He could also work to fix it by teaching Black men to stop committing crimes and then forcibly resisting arrest, and the number of police shootings of said Black male criminals will also decline dramatically.

But, that would require far too much self-reflection, and not nearly the victim hood and virtue signalling that he's selling, she he can't do that.

Jargon, Theory, And Made-Up Words In Place Of Reality

Instead of looking at reality, reality must be denied in place of critical race theory.

The Detroit Free Press: Why school isn't a safe place for every child

The op-ed is quite a bit of leftist cant and when they mean safe place its not what you would normally consider to be a safety concern.  Of course, it claims Blacks are discriminated against by being punished in higher numbers that their exact proportion of the school population, which of course doesn't take reality into account.  It then goes down the leftist rabbit hole from there.

According to the op-ed, due to the very curriculum itself, Michigan schools aren't safe for minorities,  LGBTQEIEIO and to discrimination against "multi-lingual students".

The curriculum has also been unsafe. It has detached students of color, LGBTQIA+ students and multilingual children as they learn that they are not “normal.”  The images, knowledge, people and values that permeate history, science and art, as well as mathematics, language and text are harmful. They distort the experiences of Indigenous people, of Black communities and of immigrant groups. They re-inscribe whiteness, heteronormativity and English as normal and desirable.

I find the multilingual children bit particularly hilarious. I've known a number of multi-lingual students and it's not like they're discriminated against and instead they tend to be rather brighter than most as they can speak multiple languages which tends to imply some good brain power. Do provide evidence for such an outlandish claim of discrimination, wouldja?

Instead, it's likely they mean when they say "multilingual students" they actually mean students that don't speak English and odds-on they likely are figuring out a cute new way to relabel illegal immigrants.

Speaking of English, let's look at a newly made up word in the op-ed that is simply more than very clunky:

"These patterns of unsafety in schools are harmful for everyone."

Seriously we're using "unsafety" as a word now?    No wonder they do not consider proficiency in English to be normal and desirable.

Of course, these white leftists and educational theorists - rather than actual teachers - then go on decry a curriculum including

The images, knowledge, people and values that permeate history, science and art, as well as mathematics, language and text are harmful. They distort the experiences of Indigenous people, of Black communities and of immigrant groups. They re-inscribe whiteness, heteronormativity and English as normal and desirable.
Yep, the California craziness of whiteness and math as racist has drifted eastward to Michigan's universities and is being pushed towards out schools. It's an interesting op-ed to read to see where the leftists want to push next.

Detroit Free Press Finds No News That Looks Bad to Democrats Fit To Print

No news that makes Biden and his Dem supporters look bad graces the pages of the Detroit Free Press these days.

First, just like CNN, the Detroit Free Press couldn't find the Bobulinski interview and story revealing Joe Biden's rather corrupt goings on with his son and foreign governments if their lives depended on it:

Riots happening in Philadelphia?  What Riots In Philadelphia?

Biden's statement in the debate on ending the oil industry? - forget it Jake, it's the Freep.

Yep, it's truly Iowahawk's world:

Some People's Tinfoil Hats Are On Just A Little Too Tight

The Detroit Free Press ran a rather interesting opinion piece. Interesting not so much for any factual content but more for its rather over-the-top "Trump Is Like A Fascist Hitler" approach. No, it's not an ironic humor piece. The author is desperately serious, or seriously desperate.

The piece is from an author who purports to be a lecturer of history at Wayne State university, no less. Methinks she didn't actually learn history, but instead picked up a weird feminist intersectional insanity, delivered with an earnest straight face.

The Detroit Free Press: Understanding Donald Trump in a modern post-Hitler world | Guest column

Yep, she badly needs to have you understand Trump in a post-Hitler world. The problem is quite simply that in reality Trump isn't Hitler, and it's a rather disgraceful comparison and besmirches the memory of those who were you know actually killed and harmed by Hitler to try to make some weird claim that Trump is just like him. Newsflash: We're all living in a post-Hitler world, and thankfully have been doing so for over 73 years. After 73 years anyone who doesn't know we're in a post-hitler word needs to be flunked fromt heir history class.

When Donald Trump was elected 45th president of the United States, the fear was real and justified.

Sigh, what an opening, really? In reality it was less fear and more a giant tantrum that Hillary didn't win.

Historical analogies to the dawn of Nazi Germany were made everywhere, and questions about Germany in the 1930s came at historians from many unexpected places. In my case, graduate students in the English department at my university asked me to join a teach-in on fascism, where I was supposed to talk about “fascism in America” and draw historical parallels between Trump’s America and Hitler’s Germany.
Thus is because English majors at Wayne State really know history and can see obvious paralells. No wait, they really, really don't.

Still, I had to acknowledge that this time the comparisons and analogies drawn between Trump and Hitler were different. For one, there was the frequency and the urgency with which they were being made — and I’m not just talking about the comment sections.

Ah, so if enough people are delusional enough to believe in the comparison, a historian should not explain the clear differences but should instead jump right in, neh?

On November 18, 2016, Irish Labour Party Senator Aodhán Ó Riordáin remarked that “America has just elected a fascist;” a couple of months earlier; shortly after Trump was elected, the British historian Jane Caplan brilliantly wrote about how the whole repertoire of the “fascisms of interwar Europe” seemed to have returned.” Most notable was Timothy Snyder’s bestselling pamphlet, "On Tyranny," which tried to summarize how we can preserve our democratic freedoms under a Trump presidency.

The Labor party is hardy a hot bed of realism, and as always, the dark night of Fascism keeps falling upon America, but somehow keeps landing in Europe.

Snyder had no doubt that the latter were in jeopardy. In an interview with Salon in May 2017, he warned that within a year, it was “pretty much inevitable” that Trump and his administration will try to stage a coup against democratic rule similar to the way the Nazis had used the Reichstag fire of February 1933 to justify taking full control of the German government.

So much for that prediction. No Coup for you, oh pamphleteer. Heck, no concentration camps have been setup, Gay marriage is still intact, women are not constrianed to be barefoot and in the kitchen, the government is fully dysfunctional much as it ever was, AntiFa Communist types are still allowed to commit acts of mob violence, and the trains still don't run on time. Worst Hitler evar.

As much as I share the noble concern of Timothy Snyder and others for the survival of American democracy, it is worth pointing out that, despite some striking similarities, there are also many similarly striking differences between America under Trump and Germany under Hitler – such as the fact that Germany did not have a strong democratic tradition in 1933, and that Trump’s following didn’t have a paramilitary wing comparable to the infamous SA that helped Hitler get into power.

Noble concern, please tell me that's the polite Wayne State euphemism for mass hysteria, oh it isn't? She serious? Well, thank goodness that at least she can find some minor differences between Hitler and Trump's rise to power. I'm surprised that she didn't point out the similarity that they were both elected to power and both were white males, cause that's just proof they're complete doppelgangers man, totally.

After parroting all the Trump is Hitler canards, nodding sagely wiht the purveyors of such hysteria, and stating its a noble valid fear, she tries to dance away from it a little bit.

There is also the “Hitler factor” itself: the very fact that we all already know about Hitler, whose inhuman and ultimately disastrous policies completely discredited Nazism. After all, one of Hitler’s biggest advantages was the fact that he represented something new, whose consequences most people were unable to anticipate. Hitler’s initial success was tied to just how much people inside and outside of Germany underestimated him, largely because they kept seeing him through the prism of their own past. His ascendancy to power marked, in effect, a “zero hour” of sorts. There was no precedent

No precedent of such a similar ascendancy to power? Really? Anybody have any examples of previous dictators from the past invading their neighbors and trying to take over the world and kill those they disagree with? Maybe we should ask a historian, 'cause this one seems to lack historical knowledge and is in over her head.

That brings me to my ultimate concern: While I believe in studying the past for the benefit of better understanding the present, I also strongly believe in the potential of human creativity – both for good and for bad. Fascism was the political innovation of the 20th Century. Don’t we risk overlooking and misinterpreting the new challenges represented by the Trump phenomenon if we keep looking at it almost entirely through the prism of our past? Apropos our past: Isn’t it interesting that Trump’s political rise has led many uneasy observers to look back into Germany’s past, but much less so towards that of the US – as if the ugliness of the current political moment can best be historically explained by looking away from home?

Ah, an appeal to mass idiocy. If it is interesting that multiple progressive idiots think Trump is Hitler then there must be something to it. But wait, she's now decided not to look to Europe but proclaims that we need to find something bad in America's past just like Trump to explain him.

And then the whole thing ends not with a bang, but with a "Quit focusing on Europe, America is bad too!" whimper:

Donald Trump is, however, clearly made in America. He is a symptom of a society that, as a whole, values economic success more than public service, that places entertainment (and I include cable news in that category) above responsible journalism, and that cherishes its nationalistic rituals of swearing oaths and raising flags more deeply than knowing where and why American soldiers are currently risking their lives.

The point is that this is a moment not just to look at Europe’s past: A societal reckoning with the history of the United States is long overdue. Carpe diem.

Sadly, she completely fails to give an American historical example to explain Trump Fascism. Mainly because Trump isn't an actual fascist, and because bringing up FDR would hurt her dear liberal heart. (You know, lock up citizens in camps on the basis of their race, commandeer the economy, adopt a Bismarckian socialist system, threaten the judiciary when it disagrees with him . . .Ah wait, Trump hasn't done any of that yet.). Ah well, no American history points for you.

The point actually is instead of going along with the Trump is Hitler delusion of the progressive left, it would have been far more useful for a so called senior lecturer of history to instead of playing up such nonsense is to note why such a delusion is plainly wrong. Instead we find her playing up the Trump is Hitler fears and then segueing into we must look at the bad history of bad America but then she can't give you any pertinent examples that carp her diem.

An Ominous and overdue societal reckoning indeed, or not as the case may be.

Scratch A Leftie Columnist, Find A Fascist Underneath

The Detroit Free Press' Rochelle "It's All About Race" Riley writes a column amazingly not dealing with race, the greatness of Obama, or gun control.

Taking a break from her usual tripe and expanding her horizons fascist-wise, she writes that she wants Congress to regulate cable television because 9 year-olds might watch the Walking Dead at 9pm at night and be psychologically harmed thereby.

Rather than asking what parent lets their 9-year old be awake at 9pm on a Sunday, much less letting the little tyke watch The Walking Dead?; Rather than advocating that parents you know, actually parent and control their kids bedtimes and tv content; she instead demands the government regulate and ban the evil she believes is the Walking Dead's gratuitous violence.

She actually called the FCC to complain. She was told to politely take a hike as the FCC doesn't regulate cable. She did not like that response.

So, joining the ranks of leading Democrats like Tipper Gore, she doesn't mind the government regulating and banning speech as long as it regulates things her way, and she calls on Congress to expand regulation onto the cable companies.

'Walking Dead' snuff episode should be a wake-up call

Rochelle Riley, one of the Freep's most liberal commentators actually wrote:

"We have freedom-of-speeched ourselves to death"

Rochelle, you have lots of control over your television, and you don't even have to leave your comfy chair in your liberal cocoon to do it. It's called picking up the remote control and changing the channel. Or even better, parent, supervise and have your 9 year old in bed before 9 on a night before school and the problem is solved - no big government censorship necessary.

Freep's Rochelle Riley Calls On Obama To Exercise The Divine Right Of Kings

After all, what use is separation of powers and the limitations on the executive when you want to get something unconstitutional done for your side after all? Until a Republican is elected president the Democrats are cool with untamed executive power. It almost makes me want to vote for Trump to see the proggy commentators pull the fastest 180 degree turn on executive power. Almost.

The Detroit Free Press: President Obama has just this one more thing to do

Dear Mr. President: ....

This will be hard.

This will be unprecedented. ....

But I know that you can do this thing I’m asking — because you are the president.

You must, by executive order, ban the use of assault rifles by non-soldiers, ban their sale and ownership and use away from the battlefield.

Ms. Riley apparently never took a civics class or understands or even cares the limit's on a President's power, after all she makes the tautological argument that he can do it as president because he's the president, QED.

Most adults would describe this as magical thinking.

Then she even admits it won't work, but hey, futile grand gestures and appearing to do something is important.

Yes, I know that it would be constitutional folly and that you are a Harvard-educated genius at constitutional law.

Ms. Riley if that is so, why did you just waste your time bloviating asking for it. The second half of that question is itself most questionable, especially as we still don't know what grades the genius got at Harvard, and his present performance has hardly shown any hints at genius, just sayin'.

This is what is passing for reasoned discourse from a regular byline columnist in a major progressive newspaper. Then again, it's the same major progressive newspaper that excused any hint of Islam from the Orlando attack and the fact that the shooter was a registered Democrat and instead blamed it on availability of firearms and Republican political rhetoric regarding gays.

Detroit Free Press Ignores the Terrorist In The Room, Blames Guns and Hateful Michigan Republican Rhetoric For Orlando

The Left needs the Narrative Uber Alles it seems, even in the face of the facts.

The Detroit Free Press: Easy weapon access, LGBT hate made Orlando massacre possible

Let's start here: The Pulse nightclub shootings — the largest mass murder in American history, claiming at least 50 lives — were an act of hate targeting the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

Saturday night, a shooter armed with an assault-style rifle entered the Orlando gay bar around 2 a.m. For the next three hours, the gunman terrorized the club, apparently calling 911 to pledge his allegiance to ISIS between attacks.

That — and the shooter's apparent Muslim background — are details some contemptible wretches have leapt on to explain — and thus excuse — these deaths.

Wait, What?!? In a quick paragraph the Freep totally dismisses the actual reason stated by the killer for the attack- That it was an act of Islamic terrorism in support of ISIS. Talk about begging the question - who exactly is excusing these deaths? Anyone?

But wait, there's even more magical blame-shifting to come!

In the days to come, we'll learn much, much more about the tragedy in Orlando. But at its core, this attack is the product of two things: easy civilian access to weapons that kill dozens in minutes, and the persistence of political rhetoric that marginalizes LGBT people.

LGBT Americans have fought long and hard for equality, earning a major victory last year when the U.S. Supreme Court struck down prohibitions against same-sex marriage. Almost immediately, the right wing responded with a slew of laws designed to carve out exemptions to marriage equality, most often via state-level religious freedoms laws that would provide cover for discrimination. Here in Michigan, the state Legislature approved a law last year allowing adoption agencies to refuse to adopt to same-sex couples.

The Legislature has repeatedly failed to extend the protection of the state's civil rights law to LGBT Michiganders. And now, as the state board of education is working to develop a set of voluntary guidelines for schools to provide a safe environment for LGBT kids, some state lawmakers are working diligently to demonize LGBT Michiganders.

Make no mistake: The violent acts in Orlando are rooted in this rhetoric.

So according to The Freep, the Muslim terrorist in Orlando was not in fact doing it in the name of ISIS as he claimed. After all who are you going to believe - the statements of the terrorist as to why he did what he did or the editors of the Freep?

According to the Freep, Radical Islam with its hatred of gays and the West had nothing to do with it at all. Instead, according to the Freep that's a distraction and he was driven to it by Michigan Republicans having issues with allowing males in girls changing rooms and bathrooms to attack a gay nightclub in Orlando Florida.

Note that the Editorial Board of The Detroit Free Press is making this argument with a straight face.

Maybe its a desperate attempt to get attention away from the failure of the current administration to prevent terrorist attacks here. Maybe it's an attempt to distract attention to the fact this scum was thrice interviewed by the FBI and a "known wolf". Maybe it's a desire to change the subject to one Democrats are comfortable with considering the scum was not a Republican but indeed a registered Democrat.

In any case it's a disgusting bit of misleading journalism unfit for a major newspaper.

Rise In Concealed Permits In Michigan And Opponents' Reactions Show We're Winning

Detroit Free Press: Applications up in Michigan for concealed gun licenses

How do we know we're (slowly) winning in Michigan?

We know it when opponents of firearms rights respond to the news that Concealed Carry Permits are increasing in Michigan not with reasoned argument (as if there was any reasoned argument against such).

We know it when opponents of firearms rights respond to the news that Concealed Carry Permits are increasing in Michigan not with facts.

We know it when opponents of firearms rights respond to the news that Concealed Carry Permits are increasing in Michigan with dick jokes.

Yes, dick jokes.

When the best The Detroit Free Press's left-wing cartoonist Mike Thompson can do to respond to the news that people in Michigan are taking the decision to get legal concealed carry permits is make a crude cartoon consisting of a viagra dick joke, I'd say that's a clear sign we're winning.

More Anti-NRA Calumnies From The Detroit Free Press

In an incident last week, a female CPL holder opened fire at two fleeing felon shoplifters at a home depot. No one was injured in the crime nor in her misguided intervention. Said shooter is now being charged with a misdemeanor count of reckless discharge of a firearm.

Dipping into other people's fights is never a good idea. Using deadly force to protect property is not allowed in Michigan. Furthermore, dipping into a non-violent crime in progress by cranking off some rounds at a fleeing criminal when it is not even you're stuff they're taking and they're not posing a deadly threat to you or others is a really bad idea.

In short, this particular CPL holder had bad judgment and luckily no innocent was harmed.

With all that being said, Detroit Free Press columnist Nancy "Know-Nothing" Kaffer couldn't resist form making some untrue gratuitous swipes at the NRA and gun owners in general:

How can you blame her?

When Tatiana Duva-Rodriguez shot at a fleeing shoplifter's tires in a Home Depot parking lot last week, she was only doing what she'd been told, time and again, from people like National Rifle Association chief Wayne LaPierre to presidential candidate Ben Carson: The only thing that can stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.

Or, I suppose, an alleged bad guy with what appeared to be stolen hardware goods.

Funny Nancy, the NRA has never advocated using deadly force to protect other person's property or stolen hardware goods.

Nor does Wayne LaPierre or Ben Carson saying truthfully that "The only thing that can stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun." even apply here. After all the shoplifters were unarmed.

You're reaching quite a bit too far there Nancy.

The instructions CPL holders should receive in those classes contradict the vigilante ethos pushed by LaPierre, Carson and others, who have, in the wake of repeated school shootings, argue that if only more people were armed, the shooters could have been stopped.

Say Nancy, do you know who produces the most used class in Michigan for CPL instruction, including appropriate use of deadly force? That's right Nancy, your claimed pushers of the "vigilante ethos", The NRA.

The non-sequiturs flow fast and thick in this article. What exactly do in progress shootings in gun-free zones have to do with a lady improperly engaging a couple of fleeing shoplifters? Oh right, nothing at all except in Nancy's fevered mind.

Next up Nancy will be caliming that the American Automobile Association for advocating for highway funding is clearly trying to have people speed through red lights and steal cars. That follows just about as well.

But it's folly to think that any short training course could prepare a civilian to make the kind of life-and-death, in-the-moment decisions that sometimes stymie even highly trained law enforcement officers. Or that such training could hold in the heat of a tense moment. This narrative of necessary vigilantism places an unfair burden on private citizens.

My bet is Nancy thinks the average officer gets more training in use of force than they actually do. Indeed Nancy doesn't seem to consider the fact that trained CPL holders as a group tend to get it far more right than wrong in self-defense situations and commit fewer crimes than the average citizenry. Nor is there any "narrative of necessary vigilantism" but thanks for the concern trolling and making that up there Nancy.

The folly here is that Nancy has likely never taken a CPL class and knows not what she is talking about.

"It would have been much more helpful for (Duva-Rodriguez) to take out her cellphone and shoot pictures of the shoplifter’s license plate," Cooper said.

That's the truth. I wish someone had bothered to tell her.

I'm sure, assuming she did in fact take a legitimate CPL class, that her CPL class instructor and the attorney or law enforcement officer teaching the legal portion of her CPL class did indeed provide such an instruction and guidance. That she failed to heed it is on her as an individual and she will answer for it.

Nancy, however, to support her anti-gun narrative felt the need to take this example of one misguided CPL holder and use it to bash the NRA and Ben Carson with an article full of lies and non-sequiturs.

Oh, That Liberal Media Bias

The Detroit Free Press' Nancy Kaffer is a quality example of the media's left-wing lockstep thinking.

The setting: Nancy Kaffer's article: When it comes to bad ideas, Lansing never disappoints

On clicking the link the first question you will have regarding a post concerning Lansing, Michigan and a smear job at Michigan Republicans is:

"WTF is the picture of governor Scott Walker of Wisconsin doing as the lead picture for a column about Michigan?"

Last time I checked, Gov. Walker is not the governor of Michigan, which is a pity.

Ms. Kaffer decided to draw the governor of Wisconsin into an article purported to be about those evil Michigan Republicans.

You see, Ms. Kaffer is so lock-step in fact that she couldn't miss the opportunity to join the pile-on and take a shot at the current leading Republican in the news, regardless of the actual theme of her column.

So lock-step in fact that she had to post a correction today after blindly believing without any independent attempt to verify, like using Google, another left-wing source, Jezebel, that was quickly debunked regarding the specious claim that Governor Walker was advocating the elimination reports of sexual assault at Wisconsin university campuses.

That smear sounded good to Kaffer so she ran with it without fact checking that it had already been well and truly debunked prior to her article running. Had she run even one quick search on Google to fact-check, that would have done it and prevented this embarrassment. Instead, because the claim fit the narrative, helped her left-wing cred, and gave an example of the media's notion of Republican Neanderthal-ness, she ran with it.

But fear not, the media will be objective and unbiased in the run-up to the 2016 election. They pinky swear it.

Oh, Look! The Freep Is Carrying Free Ads For Obamacare!

Well it's as close as you can come to free advertising for the Obamacare train-wreck as you can get - a feature by "guest writer" to the Detroit Free Press - none other than the US Secretary of Health and Human services herself - Kathleen Sebelius.

The Detroit Free Press: Kathleen Sebelius: Time running out to enroll in Affordable Care Act

To call it a rah-rah puff piece would be an insult to rah-rah puff pieces.

Maybe the Freep got a waiver from Obamacare in return for running this piece of dreck.

Hard to claim the mantle of media objectivity when you run administration propaganda as a feature from a guest writer.

Well, That's A Special Kind Of Journalistic Ignorance Right There

Many journalists don't seem to understand how businesses work, much less publicly-held corporations.

This could be because they've gone from jo-jobs right to the newsroom, stopping only in University to get a journalism degree how journalism's purpose, instead of reporting the news, is to "Comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable (unless the comfortable is a Democrat)".

In short they've likely never held a business position above asking if the buyer wants fries with that; or if madam would like a kerchief to match her dress; and thus have no clue how a business runs, the profit motive or the mystery of shareholder dividends. There's no room in a head full of mush to learn how the world actually works.

The Detroit Free Press' writer Ellen Creager certainly doesn't get it.

The Detroit Free Press: Michigan Traveler: Hey, Delta, where's profit sharing for passengers?

Today, Delta Air Lines posted a $1.2-billion third-quarter profit. Billion with a B.

Most of it was from what’s officially called “passenger revenue” — you know, tickets, baggage fees, change fees and other fees that you and I pay to fly Detroit Metro’s biggest airline.

Thrilled Delta executives told investors that it “began returning capital to shareholders” with $51 million in dividend payments. It also touted its employee profit-sharing program — $357 million so far this year. It also said its fuel prices are way down and should stay that way. It’s predicting a good fourth quarter.

So I am very excited.

I am watching my mailbox and sitting by the telephone.

I am expecting that any day now, I will get notice from Delta that they are also going to share their profits with me!

The article rapid;y goes downhill form there, getting dumber by the sentence.

Ms. Creager, there's a very easy way to get a share of the profits - it's called buy some Delta Airlines stock.

Let's recall that airlines have been having a hard time of it for years now - 9/11, high fuel prices, and with the TSA groping their passengers, there's been a real crimp in the industry.

That Delta is finally showing a healthy profit should be celebrated, as healthy airlines mean competitive airlines where through the competition of multiple healthy airlines, ticket prices may decline or at least be held steady in these economically uncertain times.

Also, coming form the Detroit area, Delta should be celebrated for taking over the execrable Northwest Airlines and actually introducing Detroiters and South-Eastern Michiganders to a strange new concept - a flight that actually departs and arrives on time! We flew Delta from Detroit to SFO and back, and I have to say I was impressed with the fact that both flights were on time, with the first flight actually arriving in San Fran early, the efficiency of the Delta ground staff, and the competence and friendliness of the Delta cabin crew. I'm glad they're making a profit on their work so they'll keep doing it and hopefully do it even better in the future.

Yes, Delta isn't perfect, but the fact that it is finally making a profit should be celebrated and not castigated in the childish faux-naiveté fashion of her article.

Insurance Timidity Is Not A Reason For Anti-Gun Smugness

The Freep and its columnists are still up to their smug anti-gun ways: Nancy Kaffer: The unintended consequence of arming teachers

So get this: Remember how a bunch of state legislatures passed laws allowing teachers to carry guns? Well, in many of those states, schools are now having trouble getting insurance.

....

The Michigan Legislature passed a bill last December that would have allowed people with concealed carry permits into schools; Gov. Rick Snyder vetoed it in the wake of the school shooting in Newtown, Conn. It seemed like a good move at the time, but in retrospect, it seems even smarter.

Oh, so according to Ms. Kaffer, a lack of insurance coverage for such events is now a smart reason against allowing armed teachers or other armed responsible adults to be present in schools now is it?

This insurance issue could be fixed via legislation or by allowing the insurance company to require an additional rider for coverage for incidents involving firearms at the school. Insurance companies are notoriously shy about risk, and anything outside of their traditional policies takes them some time to become comfortable with the new reality - namely that licensed carries of firearms are a very low-risk population indeed.

Note that the current liability of a school's insurance company, including one that refuses to write policies allowing licensed firearms to be present and as a result creates a nice gun-free victim-rich zone, thus enabling a madman to enter a school and kill a ton of kids is zero.

Now let's see if Nancy can smugly think about what smart results that incentive creates.

It All Depends On Whose Ox Is Gored

The Detroit Free Press editorial page, long a guaranteed apologist and defender of Obama and his priorities is finally getting somewhat annoyed with his administration as it interferes with the media's jealously guarded privileges.

Apparently it takes a direct attack on the media before the media lose their full-on lapdog mode and start to again fulfill their responsibilities as a free press.

The Detroit Free Press: Editorial: An attack on the press is an attack against us all

It’s hard to think of any justification for the Justice Department to have snatched up thousands of phone records from the Associated Press, but there had better be a forthright explanation coming.

From Attorney General Eric Holder, and from President Barack Obama, who should probably be dusting off résumés of Holder’s potential replacements.

This is government intrusion at a level that goes far beyond the issue of press protections. If federal law enforcement feels empowered to rifle through journalists’ private phone records, ostensibly looking for evidence of a government leak, then nothing would restrain similar action against other citizens.

Of course, the editorial being from the Free Press, they had to pull back their angst and defend Obama in the very same editorial, perhaps out of fear of an IRS audit if they criticized him too much:

Of course, some conservatives have leapt to an illogical conclusion: that Obama is Richard Nixon, whose abuse of government power was his undoing.

That’s absurd, but so would any suggestion that these transgressions don’t warrant serious inquiry, and serious consequences for those guilty of over-stepping their bounds.

Hmm, Benghazi, Fast and Furious, IRS and AP phone tapping and he's still not, at least in the minds of the Freep, as bad as Nixon. True enough. Nixon certainly did not enjoy this level of media sycophancy to cover his misdeeds.

Apparently the Freep will need to undergo a far bigger goring of its ox before it ceases to be a part of the Obama lapdog press.

Freep Cartoonist Mike Thompson Beclowns Himself Yet Again

Matt Thompson's Cartoon has quite the misleading caption: The Boston Terror Tragedy.

Instead of it being on the attack, and perhaps an introspective memorial or something factual, it was an insipid, unjustified, and scurrilous attack on Fox News.

The cartoon has a caricature of a Fox Newsroom with one anchor saying "Terrorism, Russkies and Radical Islam in the same story" and another anchor replies "It just doesn't get any better than this".

Way to keep it classy there Thompson.

However, it wasn't Fox News that, prior to the identification of the bombers as Islamist Chechens immigrants to the US, that filled the airwaves with speculation that the bombers might be white tea-party types.

No, that was media like Sirota types like Michael Moore and a Television station on Matt Thompson's left side of the fence - MSNBC.

Notice how he doesn't do a cartoon about how the Left lost it racing to blame the right for the bombing, and how when the perpetrators are on of the left's preferred minority groups he obfuscates the attack and the beclowning of the leftist establishment media's biased inaccuracies by making up a supposed response to the attack by Fox News.

Mike Thompson sure has been on a roll to win the Idiotarian Cartoonist Of The Year Award.
