Well This Has Been Fun

In my absence from blogging, I took younger child to University if Florida for her orientation.  More on that later. In short, it was incredibly well organized, information flowed by the ton, and she's now really looking forward to attending and has already made new friends with some great kids.

However, at some point, whether it was during Preview, sitting in the airport, or on the plane ride home, or even in the shuttle on the way to get back to the car I got exposed to Covid.

So this is now my fourth bout of Covid. Yay.

Certainly worse than my third bout with it, which solely showed up on a test with no symptoms.

For the fourth exposure, instead of nothing, I got the ugly full on man-flu effect.

Massive tiredness and lack of energy for the past three days, and a fever and congestion along with it.  Basically, I believed it was a flu until I did a Covid test, and that home test started glowing positive so quickly, it was impressive to watch.

Rations for the next few days will likely consist of pizza, pancakes, flounder, and whatever else is flat and can be slid under a door.

Not pleasant, but it feels just like a flu with no more ugliness than that, and no respiratory distress.

I think I'm already starting to improve so blogging will catch up as I catch up with work etc.

Thankfully younger daughter, who was with me the entire time, has no symptoms whatsoever and likely didn't get covided. Go figure.

Michigan Democrats: You Know Those Covid Rules? We Break Them When We Want To

Nothing like situational ethics, and situational quarantines, or lack thereof.

After testing positive for Covid, a Michigan Democrat Representative decided to attend a legislative session the very next day and vote rather than staying home for 5 days under the CDC guidelines.

That's because while the rules and guidelines for isolation if you test positive with Covid may be important, voting for the Democrat's tax and spend agenda is importanter.

The Detroit News: Democratic lawmaker shows up to vote at Capitol a day after positive COVID test

Laws and health regs are indeed for the little people.

How About Hard No?

The Atlantic: LET’S DECLARE A PANDEMIC AMNESTY

An Atlantic author, who has quite the Twitter history (with the tweet below but one example of many) of being a Covidiot:

Is now proposing we should let bygones be bygones and forgive how the Dems et al acted and overreacted during the pandemic.

My first inclination to her request for an "amnesty" would be a hard no.

Most especially as they have yet to abjectly state they were wrong.  Most Covidiots, including our governor are still busy claiming they handled the pandemic just fine and refuse to admit any mistakes.

But, well, I’m sure we could have an amnesty - right after their apologies.

Oh, and in addition to apologies, an amnesty can come only after a Truth and Reconciliation Commission too, as after all, the Left loves those.

So let’s have them all come testify before a Commission as to the absolute mess they made and lives they destroyed while they ignored actual existing plans for handling a pandemic, and then panicked and carried on like tin pot power-drunk dictators with insane lock downs that never made any rational sense.

Perhaps the testimony can include their shutting down schools with subsequent loss of learning continuing to this day; their placing Covid-positive patients in nursing homes to let the disease rip through them killing grandma and then deliberately undercounting the deaths that resulted.  Let's not also forget the arbitrary and capricious rules of the lockdowns including being able to buy food at a store but not paint in the next aisle.  No golfing or power boating but a canoe, or kayak was just fine (but not in California where you could be arrested for paddle boarding by yourself, alone on a flippin' ocean.

On second, thought let's roll with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, but screw the amnesty - these people need to live with and pay for the poor decisions they made that cost lives and inflicted misery upon their fellow Americans while they enjoyed the perquisites of their misguided power.

The Problem With Having A Positive Result

Abby got a call from her boyfriend that he had a positive test for Covid.

She then got tested, and the results are she is positive and has no symptoms.

We then get tested as after all, we've been hanging around doing family things around the house, going shopping together, etc.

I get the results back.

I'm positive with no symptoms.  Abby remains positive with no symptoms as well.

But, somehow, Tash is negative, which is strange since Abby was close by her doing stuff around the house together and breathing on her like crazy. If anything, Tash should be positive at this point.

So that's just great as I get to quarantine and no jitsu or other people-ly activities for the next few days.

Well, I get to work from home for a bit.

Nobody Cares Because The Bad Orange Man Is Out of Office

Charlie Duff asks a rather prescient question in the Detroit News today:

LeDuff: COVID deaths climb; does anyone care?

LeDuff notes that COVID deaths are higher this year in Michigan from June 2021 to June 2022 than the last year of lockdowns from June 202 to June 2021, yet there is interestingly no urgent action from our dear governor.

There's been no call for lockdowns, no arbitrary high-handed restrictions from on high, no restaurant shut downs,  no orders for masking in public.  Nothing.

Yet more people have died from or with Covid than before.

Of course, some of these deaths may be back-filling and accounting and reporting for the nursing home deaths that were under-reported when Governor Whitmer ordered nursing homes to take in Covid-positive patients, but that won't account for all of it.

We will note the true scandal in all of this was that nursing homes accounted for over 37% (likely much more once the true number is known) of all Michigan Covid deaths, and the state then undercounted at least 42% or more of those deaths.

I guess the fierce urgency to destroy the economy and immiserate the population is for some strange reason no longer so urgent.

He asks the rather important question:

Is there an acceptable death rate in Michigan, now that Gretchen E. Whitmer — and not Donald J. Trump — is up for re-election?

Funny question, that.

An Election Is Coming Up - So Let's Change Covid Reporting Methods

In essence, the purpose of statistics is to accurately measure things.

It becomes rather hard to accurately measure a thing when you change the reporting methods about the thing, making comparisons difficult if not impossible, likely due to an upcoming election.

The Detroit Free Press: Michigan health department to change how it reports COVID data

Starting next week, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is changing the way it reports coronavirus data.

It will update Michigan cases and COVID-19 deaths weekly, rather than three times a week, starting April 4 on its website

       . . .

The change in the way the state will report cases and deaths going forward adheres to a national surveillance strategy created by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said Lynn Sutfin, spokesperson for the state health department.

"At this stage in the pandemic, daily updates do not inform policy or contribute to the national surveillance program," Sutfin said. "Many states have also begun to move to less frequent public reporting of data.

Thus causing it to reflect a lagging rather than leading trend and likely end up reporting more cases but less deaths as a result.

Most  interestingly, they're now going to reduce the number of deaths publicly attributed to Covid as well:

Another change is that the health department will no longer report how many COVID-19 deaths were discovered during a review of vital records.

That's quite a change, as that retrospective review was previously used to pump the death-from-Covid numbers up.

So the numbers will now be adjusted to reduce the numbers of deaths from/with Covid in the run up to the mid-terms, and also deliberately lag in case of an increase in cases.  Our Gov can now announce there are fewer deaths based on these new statistical methods as the midterms approach.

Now isn't that wonderfully convenient?

Higher Education Application Crisis

It looks like Covid is seriously affecting college applications this year.

Students admitted last year deferred their acceptance until now and will be starting this year.  Can't really blame them, as who would want to pay thousands for online learning?

Unfortunately, this among other factors including, I suspect, Universities' progressive focus on Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity, is absolutely killing acceptance rates for graduating seniors this year.

For example Northeastern University, with a normal acceptance rate of 23% has dropped to 7%.  Northwestern University went from a normal acceptance rate 9% to 4%. Other Universities are having a similar drop. It's gone from a shot at winning the lottery to a chance at being struck by lightning to get in.

Let's take, for example, a senior graduating this year with an above 4.0 GPA, high ACT score, and a pending IB diploma in addition to the standard high school diploma from one of the highest ranked and most rigorous high schools in the entire state.  The student has years of volunteer work for a variety of issues; including being the volunteer chief of staff for a County Commissioner (a Democrat, sigh, as is she, on the very progressive wing, but still not a small thing.   The student has state-level wins at forensics, and is named valedictorian. Rather impressive, I daresay.  Oh, and she is getting rejected all over the damn place from top-level schools. She does have acceptances from lower-tier schools (including some very good ones) so fall-backs are in place, so that's something.  But that's not what she's seeking as she wants to be among the best and learn from the best in a STEM field.

Others at the school, with similar stellar resumes or better, are also getting rejected and I suspect in their cases there's some anti-Asian selection bias going on, as some of these kids are seriously super-stars, and no, they don't have "personality" issues.

Are you a caring progressive at a university concerned about Asians being "over-represented" (which is complete BS) at University because they get good grades and do the work?  Then tell the non-Asian kids to get their shit together and work half as hard as these kids do. Racial discrimination, even for lovely progressive reasons like DIE is still racial discrimination and it's still wrong - races don't go to university, individual students do.

Colleges also seem to be cutting down on their scholarship offerings as there's no need for them to induce students to apply, as there's a major surplus of applicants this year.

It's certainly an atypical year for college applications.

Gov Half-Whit Rewrites History

Elections tend to focus politicians' minds most carefully, and they try to cover up their track record of failure.

Oh really?  Remind us who closed the schools in the first place? Who kept them closed long past the time they should have opened based on you know, the science that schools were not in fact a major disease vector for Covid and that Covid was not an imminent danger to school-age kids and youth?

Oh, right, it was none other than Governor Whitmer.

Canada To Not Require Covid Tests For Vaccinated Visitors

I suspect the trucker protest, as well as the border cities that appreciate the income from American visits, are pushing the Canadian government toward Covid-realism and are the cause of this latest announcement.

The Detroit News: Canada to drop COVID tests for vaccinated visitors, official says

That will save us the hassle of getting the stupid tests before visiting Canada so its a step in the right direction.

CDC: There's A Midterm Election Coming, Time To Change The Covid Metrics

Up until today, per the CDC, all of Michigan and indeed  the majority of the country at large were considered to be areas of "High" or "Substantial" Covid risk and thus per CDC rules had to use masks in schools, indoors. etc for 95% of the country.  Nice and scary.

Then the polls were read.  The midterm elections grow ever closer.

Now, the CDC has suddenly decided to change how Covid is measured.

Nothing has actually changed with our Covid numbers in the past couple days. But now we have new friendly pandemic risk metrics and just like that, suddenly 70% of Americans no longer need to mask up per the CDC. Quite a drop to 30% from 95% the day before, neh?

Now it is time for figures to lie and liars to figure to make everything happy again.  What was an area claimed to have a substantial or high risk of death yesterday is now a friendly low risk area today.

It's a medical miracle, really, quite simply astonishing.

The Detroit Free Press: CDC's new COVID-19 metrics plunge majority of Michigan into medium risk category.

This takes 66 out of 83 Michigan counties out of the substantial/high risk zone that they were all in under the old scary metric just a day ago, and puts 12 of them into the really friendly low risk zone and 54 into the pretty comfy  medium no mask zone under the new measurement. Suddenly case rates of Covid no longer matter.

An amazing change pretty much overnight, totally unconnected to the upcoming midterms, nor to any actual change in any facts on the ground.

Child Development Messed Up By CDC's Covid Policies - In Response CDC Lowers Standards For Child Development

The fallout from the overreaction and hysteria about Covid is going to be felt for a very long time.

Substance abuse and deaths from substance abuse is sky high due to these horrendous decisions.

Mental health issues among teens is absolutely skyrocketing.  Mental health care is not keeping up.

Pre-teen mental health is also horrific right now.

Child development is also badly affected which is going to have effects on our country for a very long time.

Instead of admitting the stupid lockdown and masking policies caused developmental harm to infants, toddlers, and young children, the CDC has decided to do what bureaucrats always do when faced by the consequences of their failure:

Change and reduce the metrics for determining child development so the situation looks better than it is now.

CNN: Developmental milestones for children have changed for the first time in nearly 20 years

The Canadian Trucker Protest Now Well And Truly Has Their Attention

After being totally ignored by the US Media, and downplayed by Canadian Media, the Truckers found a useful lever for pressure that could not be ignored:  Having slowdowns/blockades at the Blue Water and Ambassador Bridges from Ontario into Michigan.

The Detroit News: White House worried about Ambassador Bridge blockade disrupting auto production

As well they should be.  It's very cute how Psaki and the Democrats are now all publicly concerned about violent protests, when this isn;t a violent protest at all:

"We support peaceful protest, but we have concerns when those protests turn violent," Psaki said. "And certainly I think it's important for everyone in Canada and the United States to understand what the potential impact of this blockage is on workers, on the supply chain and that is where we are most focused."

Let's note the truckers themselves have not been violent, the violence has all been coming from the Ontario government side with police seizing demonstrating trucker's fuel and food and government officials making threats.

Well, both major Michigan papers are now reporting on it, and both are now accurately stating it is about the vaccination mandate for trucker cross-border travel:

The Detroit News: What to know about the traffic delays at Ambassador Bridge, trucker protest over COVID mandate

The Detroit Free Press: Truckers protest at Ambassador Bridge over COVID-19 vaccine mandates: What we know

Hilariously, the Detroit Free Press states:

Truckers calling themselves the Freedom Convoy are opposing a Canadian mandate requiring drivers entering Canada to be fully vaccinated or face testing and quarantine requirements.

But it didn't just start this week. [emphasis added!]

Before the Ambassador Bridge was targeted, truckers also protested in Ottawa, Canada's capital.

Seriously Freep, thanks for finally telling us that you only deigned to cover it this week and it's been going on for longer than that in Canada's capital. Sheesh, kinda important news, that.

Lockdowns Not Only Didn't Work, They've Caused Damage That Will Take A Generation To Unravel

Not only did lockdowns not save lives from Covid,  they did more harm than good.

The ill-conceived Lockdowns did not just impose an economic catastrophe on the lower and middle classes and affected the mental health of millions - they've likely harmed our newest generation of children.

Ed Source:  Pandemic effects may have lowered baby IQs, study says

A new study by researchers at five universities found that babies born during the pandemic may have lower IQ scores than those born before it. Babies who came into the world before the coronavirus had a cognitive score hovering around 100, according to this study. But the test scores of babies born during the pandemic fell sharply, to around 78. That’s 22 points lower than what’s considered normal.

Let's explain just how huge such a drop of 22 points from the norm is.

Let's put it this way.

The Dems love to rag on the military and claim military members are stupid.

Remember when John Kerry   "told college students that if "you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq."

Well, the US Army's IQ cut off for entry is around an 83 IQ (its complicated but pretty much that score when compared to the ASVAB minimum etc).

The military already does not accept the lowest 23% of the population already.  (Insert leftists snide commentary about military members being dumb or "lowest of the low" (Yes a California Dem Teacher /city councilman made that comment) - when they're clearly not.

In short, the average child born during the lockdowns and mandatory mask rules with an IQ of 78 is literally unable to serve in the military or indeed conduct themselves in what is becoming a more and more technological society that demands intelligence.

This is a horrific result of an ill-conceived and enacted policy and is going to have severe consequences for a very long time.

On The Canadian Trucker Protest

In case you didn't know, and the MSM is doing their damnedest to make sure you don't.  For example, both the Detroit News and Free Press fail to mention what is going on with our neighbors to the South (and north - Michigan is funny that way) on the front pages of their websites, nor in the news section at all. You'd think news of this nature would be important to a main border state with Canada with close trade ties and dependence on Canadian parts for the automotive industry, but nary a peep.  Interesting, that.

The storythousands of truckers - 50,000 truckers or more - and trucks are descending on Ottawa to protest the Canadian government's mandate that  thy must be vaccinated in order to ship goods across the border and come back to Canada.  The US has announced a similar mandate.

Both mandates are rather inane.

The Canadian government under Justin Trudeau is in essence is busily shouting "Respect my authoritay" and the truckers are shouting back:  "No."

Justin Trudeau then bravely ran away from Ottawa tand fled to a secret location avoid the protesters. This is what happens when you make a substitute teacher a prime minister based solely on name recognition because of who his father was.

After all what do truckers do?

They're driving their trucks in their cabs alone for hours, drop off their loads and come back, not exactly hotbeds of exposure or spread.

As much as they claim to be "following the science": in passing these inane regs that will further snarl the supply chain in both countries, the science actually indicates:

1. You can still catch Covid and variants if you're vacinated

2. You can still spread Covid and variants if you're vaccinated

3.  At best Vaccination does seem to offer some protection from Covid and variants, and you'll likely get having less severe symptoms as a result.

4.  Unless you're over 70 (and much worse if you're over 80). As an aside, the average life expectancy in Canada is 79.9 for men and 84 for women, and US is 77 for men and 81 for Women pre-covid.  So unless youre of advanced age  close to your life expectancy average, and/or have serious comorbidities, the chance of death form Covid is darn low.

As such, there's really no longer a public health argument to be made for mandatory vaccination to stop the disease from spreading as works with other vaccinations.

The only remaining public health argument is that allegedly being vaccinated means with less severe symptoms you're less likely to need to go to a hospital and use public health resources - but we're seeing vaccinated people also having to be hospitalized so the data is rather unclear.

In short its a personal choice to have the shot and thus a shot at less severe symptomsor not, especially if you're in a low risk group.

Making truckers, who tend to be pretty active and in  lower risk groups in terms of age and comorbidity be required to get the shot is rather inane.

After all, this mandate only happened in January 2022 - truckers have been delivering goods across the border unvaccinated throughout this pandemic now for years with no reported mass outbreaks due to truckers, or any other outbreaks by them for that matter.

This more and more seems to be governments  being desperate to be seen to be "doing something" and flexing their authority without any real scientific basis for doing so - and with a further worsening of shipment delays be damned.

In short, they've had enough with government over-reaction and control over the past few years. You know its bad when you've managed to get Canadians of all people ticked off enough to get up and mount a serious protest:

You Can Count On The Biden Admin To Make Things Worse - Supply Chain Edition

Let's theorize for a moment.

You're having a supply chain crisis.

Goods are not getting to where they need to be quickly enough.  You have pent-up demand, store shelves going empty, and cars and trucks and other vital machinery not being built due to a shortage of parts and the inability to quickly deliver those parts when avaialble to where they need to go.

Do you:

A. Facilitate doing everything possible to unclog the system and make it easier for deliveries to happen; or

B.  Add new regulations that are going to further mess up the supply chain by limiting the truck drivers and other delivery operators that can cross the border in a futile fixation on mandatory 100% vaccination, when it's already a known fact that the vaccinated can catch the virus and still carry and infect others even while vaccinated?

Yep, the Biden Administration, in yet another stroke of brilliance chose B.

PJMedia: If You Thought the Supply Chain Crisis Was Bad Enough, DHS Could Make It Worse

“Starting on January 22, 2022, the Department of Homeland Security will require that non-U.S. individuals entering the United States via land ports of entry or ferry terminals along our Northern and Southern borders be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and be prepared to show related proof of vaccination,” said Secretary Alejandro N. Mayorkas. “These updated travel requirements reflect the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to protecting public health while safely facilitating the cross-border trade and travel that is critical to our economy.”

This has not been a requirement for all the years now that goods have been shipped during this pandemic. Why demand it now and further interfere with cross-border trade when if anything we need to facilitate people crossing with goods as much as possible?

Even Canada stopped this idiotic policy of requiring delivery drivers to be vaccinated before crossing the border when truck drivers rebelled against it, but here we have the Biden admin doubling down and pushing a failed and rather nonsensical policy that is only going to further slow down the delivery of goods to where they are needed most and which will not improve public health.

Seriously, Biden is about to implement a stupid and useless policy that even Canada has pulled back from implementing due to its both uselessness and lousy effects on the supply chain.

Oh, and meanwhile, Illegals are still pouring in not being either tested nor vaccinated for Covid, and being welcomed and then shipped by the Biden administration around the US.

You really can't make this up.

Expect more shortages and delays in receiving goods near you due to yet another inane Biden policy.

Canada About To Further Befoul Supply Chains In A Riddiculous Own-Goal

The Detroit News: Michigan faces acute impact from Canada's refusal to let in unvaccinated US truckers

This newly implemented policy is already outdated, short-sighted, inane, and doesn't concord with "the science".

We now know and have known for awhile now that the vaccines do not prevent transmission of Covid and variants.

As such the public health argument for requiring them to prevent spread is damn weak. Requiring them for truckers delivering goods is even weaker

We now know and have known for awhile now that the vaccines do not categorically prevent people from getting Covid even if vaccinated.

We do see statistically at least that having the vaccine does make your symptoms more mild and may result in you having no symptoms at all, and make you more able to fight off the virus. Clearly this is a good thing for the elderly, people with comorbidities etc and they do have value to that extent.

For example Tash got it, was vaccinated so relatively mild but even still categorized as feeling like her worst flu ever, she now has a lingering cough and shortness of breath.  Likely her vaccine reduced the potency of the case.  Likely also that our vaccines either prevented us from catching it from her as none of us came down with it despite being in the car with her for 5 hours after her exposure, or the vaccines gave us such a low reaction we don't even know we got it - although Ab's test came up negative for it.

As such, its very much a personal choice as to their use and the elderly and those with high risk factors ought to think carefully about getting the vaccine to protect themselves and people with lower risk factors may choose otherwise. Probably the vaccine is still a good choice to make, but again it's your body, you weigh your own risk factors and make your own informed choice.

It makes no sense now for Canada to introduce a regulation barring truckers shipping vital goods across the border unless they're vaccinated. Especially as we know the main public policy reason for the vaccine - preventing spread to others - simply isn't the case as the vaccines are currently not fully capable of doing that and even vaccinated people are picking up cases.

Expect more supply shortages in the auto industry and elsewhere due to this inane policy given our close trading ties.  The only consolation, if you can call it that,  is Canada is going to feel the effects worse than the US will as a result of this idiocy.

Whitmer: Those Medicaid Rolls Weren't Going To Empty Themselves

Fox News: Whitmer admin significantly undercounted Michigan nursing home COVID deaths, state auditor finds

To the tune of undercounting deaths by about 42% per a recent audit to be publicly released Monday.

Michigan, under oGvernor Whitmer was one of the handful of states - all Democrat run - that required nursing homes to take in Covid positive patients.

With the completely unsurprising result of over a third of all deaths from Covid in Michigan coming from nursing homes. Put a disease that ravages the elderly and those with comorbidities in a place that is chock-full of residents that are elderly and comorbiditiesand it shouldn't have taken a rocket scientist to know what would happen.

After all, 84% of all deaths from Covid in Michigan are age 60 and over.

Requiring nursing homes to take in Covid positive patients was quite simply an insane policy, and the powers that be have been trying to obfuscate, duck, and deny responsibility for this horrendous policy ever since.  Given a complicit Democrat AG, and complicit media here, they may just get away with it.

So, Was Firing Unvaccinated Hospital Workers A Bright Idea?

The Detroit News: COVID surge could send health system 'over the edge,' Michigan officials say

So firing health care workers may not have been the best idea, neh?

Especially since the vaccines for Covid neither prevent you from getting the disease nor prevent you from spreading it to others, the move to fire those who chose to remain unvaccinated was rather ill-advised.

On the upside the vaccines while not stopping you from getting the Covids does seem to prevent serious complications, so it's still likely is a good choice to get it, but I'd say its up to you to as an adult to weigh your options and decide on what's best for you.

Tash felt lousy for quite a few days but has pretty much recovered, albeit not back to 100% yet. Basically to her it felt like a particularly lousy flu and nothing more - headaches, low energy and tiredness.  Her mom in her 80s is also recovering nicely and given her history of health problems, I'd say the vaccines likely helped her recover.

In addition my fellow Michiganders, if you happen to feel like you may have the 'rona, quit rushing to the Emergency Room to get tested.   The test will not make you feel any better and you're taking up space and resources for people who actually need it.

Stay home, rest up and don't go to the hospital until you actually need to go to the hospital.  Quit freaking out. Omicron, while not pleasant seems to be pretty mild on a par with flus we get every year, so calm down, ok?

The Covids Are Coming From Inside The House!

No need to panic however.

Natasha's mom was feeling about wiped out over New Year's.  Then lost he sense of smell and taste and tested positive for Covid.

Quite a concern given shes in her 80's but shes doing better now, just a bit winded and did not need to go to the hospital.

Unfortunately, we're pretty sure she gave it to Tash, who on Sunday also lost her sense of smell, taste and otherwise has symptoms mirroring those she had back in December 2019 and after her jab. We have isolated her off accordingly.

Kids got tested and are negative, I'm fine with no symptoms but no time to be in line for hours for a test right now.

Tash is doing better,  just a little winded.

Such fun.

The Definition of Insanity Is Doing The Same Thing Over Again And Expecting Different Results

Applying that definition, Canada has gone insane, or verily has been insane for a few years now.

The Detroit News: Ontario shuts schools, indoor dining and gyms

CTV news:  Quebec shuts down schools, bars, gyms, theatres as COVID-19 cases soar

Let's hope Michigan doesn't join in the insanity more than it already has to date, yet the pump sure is being primed:

The Detroit News: Michigan's COVID hospitalization tally increases to start 2022

Folks, welcome to Year Three of 15 days to stop the spread.
