There was a herd (or is that a flock?) of P-51 Mustangs at Thunder over Michigan this year.

Gentleman Jim:

Old Crow:

Sierra Sue:

They did a number of circular passes to demonstrate strafing runs and those Merlin engines purred above the crowd. Awesome warbirds indeed.

When I was a kid, there was a guy (I think he was a doctor) in my home town who owned and flew a P-51D. Allegedly, he once asked the tower for priority in landing because each trip around the pattern cost him $25. (This was around 50 years ago. I wonder how much it would cost now.)

Operating costs for a P-51 these days seem to be around $1,100 per hour, a touch higher than the $25 of your youth.
